laos, 2006
Notes:
- Phonsvanh, one of the most heavily bombed areas of Laos during the US "secret war" during the Vietnam War, has made use of bomb shrapnel by turning them into things like silverware and other home furnishings. There are still many unexploded bombs hidden around the province that kill or maim people all the time. M.A.G. is one of the organizations dedicated to clearing the bombs from the area.
- Beer Lao is served practically everywhere in Laos. It's amazing, amazing beer. Usually accompanied by "Lao Lao," or a local kind of whiskey. I drank so much (out of politeness!) that I threw up one night in Phonsavanh.
- In Vang Vieng we went tubing (riding down a river in an inner tube) for a day. There are no pictures of that because I didn't want my camera wet. While we were there, people on the docks would play Jack Johnson and sell Beerlao and play music.
- Happy pizza is pizza baked with marijuana inside. A happy shake is pretty much the same.
- Route 13 is the road from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang, a long and windy highway with beautiful rolling mountains all along. The ride made most of us throw up. Route 13 is also the place where a tour bus was attacked by Hmong rebels a few years back. We were concerned -- especially when 2 guys showed up on the bus with giant rifles on their back. But they just got off the bus a few miles later.
